I posted this on The Chipmunks forum earlier in General Chat, but I thought I'd make a slightly lengthened and altered version of it as a journal here.

Earlier today I read a comment on here saying that "everything in the live action movies was sooooooooooooooooo much better than the 80's cartoon". I wanted so desperately to reply, but the person who made the comment already had my blocked for reporting one of their friends for recolors.

CGI may have taken over this fandom. It may have brought with it a ton of idiots. People that recolor, repitch. People that have no grasp of the characters' actual personalities. Because, like it or not, the movies themselves mess with all of those things. They don't repitch or recolor, of course. Although they did change colors significantly, specifically the eye colors, from The Chipmunks and Chipettes cartoon counterparts.

A lot of people in this fandom, mainly CGI people, you can't deny, care more about their 'OC's'(which in actuality aren't OC's, they're fancharacters) than they do the actual Chipmunks and Chipettes. Which is extremely idiotic. What's the point of being in a fandom if you don't even like the actual characters?

Anyway, back to CGI's impact.

It will never have anything on the cartoon. They may be able to mess with the characters, fiddle with the storyline, destroy the characters' backgrounds.

They may have three full length movies, four albums, a couple of video games, and a handful of merchandise.

But you know what we have? We have three full length movies, a series with 102 episodes(many of which have two segments, so you could really count it as twice that in some cases), a series of 26 episodes, seven specials, countless albums, countless amounts of merchandise, and nearly 50 years of existence before they came along.

Plus the fact the characters all stay true to their actual personality.

You just can't beat that.

I agree completely - it took me a while to figure out what bugged me about the CGI movies, and it's everything you just said :)

Also, I think what they did that was really stupid in those movies was that they reset each of the character's personalities, but they never developed them like the cartoons. I've been waiting for it to happen (I'm a patient person who had faith), but it never did. I think they started to do it in Chipwrecked, but even then, it wasn't the same as the cartoons.

What amuses me is that I'm pretty sure they finished the movies so quickly because they realized how much they screwed it up. Theo's not tall enough to cook, for one. Eleanor can't play soccer at her size. Simon doesn't have his basement. Alvin doesn't wear his cap. The list goes on :D very much worth a ranting page :P

Couldn't agree with you more in this journal! :D I thought the CGI movies were pretty good, but saying they're way better than the cartoon is a bit of a stretch.

And that's one thing that bothers me about the fandom, that a lot of it isn't even directed at the canon characters, but rather at the superfluous number of OC's. It never made sense to me... :|

This is a really great journal (sorry it took me so long to comment). And you're right, not matter how CGI screws things up, the Cartoon fans are still more fortunate. :)

I personally don't think they're too bad,and I like the fact that they tried making them look like actual chipmunks witch they did a good job of in my opinion and there actually really cute but they should've left the eye colors as they were in the cartoon.

And yeah, they should've stuck with the original backstory for The Chipettes instead of the whole Ian Hawk thing,I always thought that was kinda stupid.

I think they're ugly. I hate the fact they tried making them look like real Chipmunks, especially since they did a terrible job of it because real Chipmunks look nothing like that.

Yeah. And they should have kept their original personalities. Your username says you love Eleanor, you can't possibly like CGI Eleanor and like cartoon Eleanor because she's the one they messed up the most. Her personality in CGI is the exact opposite of what it is in the cartoon. In the cartoon Eleanor is stubborn, sporty, tough, and really a complete badass. In CGI she's an oblivious sweet little thing that pees on herself when she's scared.

We all have our own opinions,I like both.

I actually like both Eleanor's,I dunno I just find both versions cute, but they could've done alot better with The Chipette's backstory in the second movie,I mean come on! That always bugged me.

I would recommend meeting Ross and Janice in person if you ever got the chance. There is nothing like holding a conversation in person, in the flesh. Much more interactive than this. It would also be the most effective way to get your point across to them, as they *do* provide the funds for what you detest.
