I posted this on The Chipmunks forum earlier in General Chat, but I thought I'd make a slightly lengthened and altered version of it as a journal here.

Earlier today I read a comment on here saying that "everything in the live action movies was sooooooooooooooooo much better than the 80's cartoon". I wanted so desperately to reply, but the person who made the comment already had my blocked for reporting one of their friends for recolors.

CGI may have taken over this fandom. It may have brought with it a ton of idiots. People that recolor, repitch. People that have no grasp of the characters' actual personalities. Because, like it or not, the movies themselves mess with all of those things. They don't repitch or recolor, of course. Although they did change colors significantly, specifically the eye colors, from The Chipmunks and Chipettes cartoon counterparts.

A lot of people in this fandom, mainly CGI people, you can't deny, care more about their 'OC's'(which in actuality aren't OC's, they're fancharacters) than they do the actual Chipmunks and Chipettes. Which is extremely idiotic. What's the point of being in a fandom if you don't even like the actual characters?

Anyway, back to CGI's impact.

It will never have anything on the cartoon. They may be able to mess with the characters, fiddle with the storyline, destroy the characters' backgrounds.

They may have three full length movies, four albums, a couple of video games, and a handful of merchandise.

But you know what we have? We have three full length movies, a series with 102 episodes(many of which have two segments, so you could really count it as twice that in some cases), a series of 26 episodes, seven specials, countless albums, countless amounts of merchandise, and nearly 50 years of existence before they came along.

Plus the fact the characters all stay true to their actual personality.

You just can't beat that.

I agree completely - it took me a while to figure out what bugged me about the CGI movies, and it's everything you just said :)

Also, I think what they did that was really stupid in those movies was that they reset each of the character's personalities, but they never developed them like the cartoons. I've been waiting for it to happen (I'm a patient person who had faith), but it never did. I think they started to do it in Chipwrecked, but even then, it wasn't the same as the cartoons.

What amuses me is that I'm pretty sure they finished the movies so quickly because they realized how much they screwed it up. Theo's not tall enough to cook, for one. Eleanor can't play soccer at her size. Simon doesn't have his basement. Alvin doesn't wear his cap. The list goes on :D very much worth a ranting page :P

Couldn't agree with you more in this journal! :D I thought the CGI movies were pretty good, but saying they're way better than the cartoon is a bit of a stretch.

And that's one thing that bothers me about the fandom, that a lot of it isn't even directed at the canon characters, but rather at the superfluous number of OC's. It never made sense to me... :|

I personally don't think they're too bad,and I like the fact that they tried making them look like actual chipmunks witch they did a good job of in my opinion and there actually really cute but they should've left the eye colors as they were in the cartoon.

And yeah, they should've stuck with the original backstory for The Chipettes instead of the whole Ian Hawk thing,I always thought that was kinda stupid.

I think they're ugly. I hate the fact they tried making them look like real Chipmunks, especially since they did a terrible job of it because real Chipmunks look nothing like that.

Yeah. And they should have kept their original personalities. Your username says you love Eleanor, you can't possibly like CGI Eleanor and like cartoon Eleanor because she's the one they messed up the most. Her personality in CGI is the exact opposite of what it is in the cartoon. In the cartoon Eleanor is stubborn, sporty, tough, and really a complete badass. In CGI she's an oblivious sweet little thing that pees on herself when she's scared.

We all have our own opinions,I like both.

I actually like both Eleanor's,I dunno I just find both versions cute, but they could've done alot better with The Chipette's backstory in the second movie,I mean come on! That always bugged me.

I would recommend meeting Ross and Janice in person if you ever got the chance. There is nothing like holding a conversation in person, in the flesh. Much more interactive than this. It would also be the most effective way to get your point across to them, as they *do* provide the funds for what you detest.

Agreed.

I'm glad that Mr. Bagdasarian wanted to keep them alive, and I appreciate it a lot. I know that he also had today's generation of children in mind when creating the new movies, and since all animation companies are turning to 3D/CGI animation now, I don't think he had much of a choice but to make them look like actual chipmunks (because I highly doubt that taking their old human-like forms would look appealing being made with 3D animation..). Yes, the CGI sucks and I hate them, but I personally think that it's better than having them die off completely and be forgotten. Perhaps the CGI version wouldn't be as bad if they had kept their old stories and personalities the same.

I agree.

I can't believe that they are going to make a Fourth Movie. I didn't even bother watching the Third One.. The previous two were just so painful to watch.

You were right about what they lacked. Their personalities, their eyes etc.

What they did lack most of was Heart. That " Our Parents were hippies " line always annoyed me.

Me neither. -_- I was so angry and upset when that announcement was made. The third one is actually the 'best' of the three, in my opinion. It seems like in some parts of it they tried bringing back their real characters and failed. It at least has the best plot. It would be an enjoyable movie if it wasn't supposed to be The Chipmunks, I think.

Yeah. -___-

AMEN. That's the thing that made the cartoons so great. There was always a lesson, there was always love, there was always friendship, and family. The CGI movies don't have any of that. Dave is a bastard to them all the time and really has not shown that he 'loves them' in any way.

And that line...OH GOD THAT LINE PISSES ME OFF SO BAD. I could rant about it for hours.

CGI Brittany in Chipwrecked may have acted somewhat bitchy towards Alvin, but she couldn't compare to how bitchy the real Brittany would have acted in that situation.

It's only because they looked more animal like, but I do have my share of problems with them. For one, the eye colors, for another the one CGI design for Jeanette was terrible, for lack of a better word. Aside from that, the personalities in the cartoon were better, especially Eleanor. When I used to draw Chipmunk comics, I used the CGI designs, but tried to stay true to the cartoon personalities since there was a time where I drew the comic in the cartoon style.

Damn, well so WHAT if they all fucked with their background and all that jazz. What's the point of stopping them from doing so anyway? Heh, Hell if I had my own TV-Show (starring ME of corse) it be a Cartoon. But if anyone fucks with THAT then I'd either...
1.) Sue them.
Or
2.) Kicked their asses.
Hell we can't cotrol the people who does these things anyway, unless we have our OWN Cartoon-Shows but with us and ourselves in them as Main-Characters and...
Wait... Did I just have a new idea or something...? Daaaaaamn I think I'm starting to get too many for now... But anywho yeah, only way for us to keep the fandom alive is if we had made our OWN Cartoon-Shows. And MAYBE the CGIs can somehow stop, just giving an idea here... (Even though it DID just somehow popped into my head just now...)

CGI will never even begin to compare with the Cartoon. The cartoon had it all, better music, better merchandise, better movies, not to mention the series and specials.....It was PERFECT.

I like CGI, but most of the CGI fans really annoy me. The complain about how the cartoon sucks, but you say a word against CGI and you're flamed as a hater, a troll, or a bully, and it's not right. I hate hypocrites, and far too many of the CGI only fanbase are incredible hypocrites.

Eeehhh... I wanted to bite my tongue on the "My opinion is surperior" flying through this journal until I read this comment.

Personally, it's the other way around in my experience. Flip the words CGI and Cartoon with each other and you have my views / experience. Just wanted to leave it on that note.

That doesn't go for all cartoon fans, there's plenty of them who are awesome and respect other peoples views, and then there's the side of the cartoon fandom that slashes your throat if you even try to say hello to them. *Shrug*

In your experience being the key words of your reply.

I've met far more friendly Cartoon fans, or people like myself who like CGI, but love the Cartoon, than I have sole CGI fans. I've seen Cartoon fans and CGI fans at their best and worst. Unfortunately, both sides have their bad seeds. But both sides of the argument have respectful, sane people.

I've just had a lot of bad encounters with soley CGI fans, so what I say is coming from my own, personal experiences. I suppose I should have said "Most of the CGI fans I've interracted with", rather than making a sweep of the entire half of that fandom. If you feel I offended you, I'm sorry, didn't mean to, this is just my opinion, and my experiences.

Also, I don't think this comes off as a "My Opinion is Superior" I see this as a "My Opinion" journal.
