Okay. So ever since we got ahold of a panel from the storyboard from Episode #2: Talkin' Teddy
from Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks,
everyone has gone on to assume that The Chipmunks and Chipettes will be the size they were in the CGI movies in the new cartoon.
This assumption would make sense in theory because of this image:
As you see, Alvin and Simon are much smaller than the teddy bear in this picture. This would lead one to assume that they are the size of actual chipmunks...
And we all did believe that, but my friends and I have realized there is more evidence proving they aren't the size of actual chipmunks and are indeed child sized like they were in the cartoons.
I'll start with the only image we have that is an actual screenshot from the show itself. It is from the promo video that has yet to be released, but we have managed to get a still from PGS Entertainment's Vimeo page.
This image is what first led us to realize that they were most likely human sized after all.
pointed out that Alvin, in relation to the bricks, would be the size of a child, not the size of a chipmunk, assuming those are normal sized bricks.
Today I noticed that the bricks aren't the only thing indicating Alvin's size in this picture. There is also the wood panels of the hardwood floor beneath him. Notice their size in relation to him is the same as his size in relation to the wall. Compared to them, he is the size of a human child.
Now, if this is not enough for you, let's look back to when we got our first glimpse of the new designs: The iMunk App.
Now, Alvin's design has changed slightly since then, he has more rips in his clothing, his head is smaller, his dark head fur no longer extends over his ears and instead stops in front and behind like human hair with sideburns, etc; The animation is also cheaper than that which the show will have because it is merely an iPhone app.
It's still important to the point here because his size there should reflect his size in the show itself.
And look at his size there...
The floor is the same as the size in relation to the screenshot.
He also has speakers and a drum set behind him. EVERYTHING behind him is the size it would be if he were a human child.
Now, one could argue and say that they are custom made to be smaller(like the guitar could possibly be, which is why I didn't bring the guitars in either image up). But you can't custom build a whole world for them...that would be stupid. Making them larger would be far more logical.
Speaking of logical, let's bring up some more points.
From the plots we know for the new show, The Chipmunks will encounter things such as school bullies, generational gaps between parent and child, Dave's lack of knowledge about modern technology, etc;
School bullying may have been done in The Squeakquel, but there is only so much you can do with chipmunk sized chipmunks being bullied. It didn't work very well there, and I think if that happened here it wouldn't work well either.
The CGI movies also didn't do a very good job with the whole father-child aspect of Dave and the boys' relationship. Even before I hated CGI, I never got that vibe. I got that more 'manager'(although he was terrible at it..) vibe from them, like the vibe in The Alvin Show except terrible. I think part of the reason for this is because you can't look at a man and a rodent and think "oh that's his kid" you think "oh that's his pet". With The Chipmunks more humanized, it's easier to see The Chipmunks as Dave's adoptive children.
And don't tell me you can see a chipmunk sized chipmunk using a computer. Nope.
Moving on from that, to my next subject.
While the Alvinnn!!! Chipmunks and Chipettes obviously do take some characteristics from the CGI movies, they are clearly more influenced by the cartoon Chipmunks.
Their proportions are not that of actual animals, so why should they be the size of actual animals?
The very reason they were made small in the CGI movies was because the movies were live action. Ross has said this himself in an interview. He said they didn't want "four foot killer chipmunks" running around!
But now that they are making something that is not live action, it makes sense to change them back to their normal size.
I saw someone say somewhere today that they could have more plots like Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers if they made them chipmunk sized.
Okay, I used to love Chip and Dale as a kid, and Rescue Rangers was probably one of my favorite childhood cartoons. (I don't like Chip and Dale anymore because they show up in my search results on eBay and annoy me).
We're talking about two completely different types of shows here.
Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers is about chipmunks who live in a tree and go and rescue people and stuff.
Alvin and The Chipmunks is about a family of adopted kids who are celebrities and happen to be chipmunks(who live with a human).
You can't have similar plots in shows centered around completely different things. It's not possible. The only similarity between The Chipmunks and Chip and Dale is that they are talking chipmunks...
Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks is supposed to be a sitcom. I can't see that with actual chipmunk sized chipmunks.
You can disagree with me, who knows, I might be wrong, but I doubt it. That bear is probably either huge or a costume. We won't know either way until we get more information, but until then, I'm going to believe that they are their cartoon size.
That is all.
